Thermoelectric modules have been available for cooling and power generation for many decades; however, traditional bulk thermoelectric modules are made with ~1mm x 1mm x 1mm pellets assembled into a large array between two ceramic substrates. In contrast, Nextreme fabricates its eTECs with advanced thin-film technology that replaces these 1 mm³ pellets with a thin film thermoelectric material this is just 10 micrometers thick. The resulting device has the following unique advantages:
- Ultra small size – Our eTECs can be as thin as a piece of paper and range from postage-stamp size down to the size of a pinhead.
- Ultra-fast response time – Our eTECs respond in milliseconds whereas conventional technology responds on the order of seconds.
- Uniquely-high power pumping capability – As coolers our eTECs can pump 10-20x more power than conventional technology.
- Uniquely-high output power densities – In power generation mode our eTECs can deliver more power per unit area than any other device.
These advantages and features allow the Nextreme eTEC to address a broad array of defense, aerospace and commercial applications, including but not limited to integrated circuits, LEDs, sensors, photonics, bioelectronics and micro-fluidics.
